We have connections: our Mrs Canter is very involved in the management of Swimming South Africa. When it became apparent to her that the services of musicians would be appreciated at the opening ceremony of the National Championship Gala which took place at the Newton Park Swimming Pool last week, Mr Koopman jumped at another opportunity to show off our growing prowess.
The band played a number of upbeat pieces to entertain the spectators on their arrival, accompanied the various province flag bearers in their march-past, and then played the national anthem as all in the pool precinct sang along. Mind you, singing along was not easy - everyone wanted to remain silent in order to enjoy the magnificence of the soaring voice of soloist Terry-Ann Julie’s.
A great highlight for me personally: the availability of Wakaberry at the Newton Park Baths. I’m suddenly more interested in attending swimming events.
