We had an assembly with a difference this morning - we could not use the hall so we used the indoor swimming pool area! It was a tight squeeze but an interesting change from the norm. Many children were recognised for their achievements in various activities. We ended the assembly with Mr Koopman playing the 'Last Post' to remind us about 'Poppy Day' that will be celebrated around the world on Sunday.
What a wonderful way to celebrate Arbour Month and be able to plant two healthy indigenous trees along our tennis courts this morning. The trees were lovingly donated by Newton Park Checkers. Chantal van Jaarsveld and her team came along to witness the Foundation Phase planted the trees into the holes prepared by the ground staff of the school. Checkers and Herbert Hurd proudly supporting National Arbour Month.
Our annual Foundation Phase Grandparents Day was held on Wednesday morning. We hosted over 500 grandparents in the hall. They were treated to the Junior Choir singing and a sneak peak at some of the items from 'Our Greatest Show'. Then they were able to visit their precious grandchildren in their classes.
Our Grade 4's and 5's were very fortunate to have Lori Preston visit our school yesterday. Lori Preston is an East London based author who has written a book called 'Thabo the Space Dude'.
Lori came to talk to the pupils about how her journey as an author began and she shared some important steps to remember when writing a story. Lori read an extract from the book which is written for South African children using language that these children use and understand. She played a few games with our children, answered questions and handed out stickers. Pupils had the opportunity to buy Lori's book and she wrote in and signed each copy. She has also donated a copy to our school library.
What a wonderful experience for our children! Thank you, Lori Preston, for sharing your journey with us.
