Grade 7 Orators' Competition

The Grade 7 Orators’ Competition was held in the Martin Emmerick Hall on Wednesday 15 May. The audience was treated to excellent, well-researched and thought-provoking orals. Thank you to our two adjudicators: Mrs Pons and Mrs Scheepers, who brought years of experience to the assessment table. The winner of the day was Siyaam Shaw who spoke passionately about “Bullying”. Her unprepared oral was “If I had only one wish, I would wish for …”. What followed was a hilarious description of her mother dancing which had the audience in stitches. Jasmin Esau received a highly commended acknowledgement for her prepared oral titled “Moral Integrity”. Lindsay O’Neill Campher was also recognized fo

Grade 6 Orators Competition

On Tuesday, 7 May 2019, the Grade 6’s held their annual Orator’s Competition. The competition was held in the school library. The competition was fierce, with eight well-prepared speakers taking the stage. The eight speakers were the finalists from 132 learners in the grade. This, in itself, was an amazing achievement! The speakers for this year were: Zandré Botha, Tara Nel, Julia Quevauvilliers, Jade Carolus, Imaan Bhene, Zahraa Caderbegg, Audrey Yossakamlouk and Fezile Damoyi. The competition was made up of two sections, a five-minute prepared oral followed by a minute unprepared oral. A special thank you to Mrs Warneke, who was our judge for the competition and to all the parents that ca

Grade 3 Outing to Willows

The Grade Threes had a most enjoyable visit to The Willows Resort. Accompanied by the Grade Three teachers and 2 of our Herbert Hurd dads, Mr James and Mr Gabriel, we set off at 8:00 on our journey. The weather was very kind to us and we fortunately didn’t experience high temperatures. The pupils took turns on the slippery slide and had so much fun splashing their teachers. Unfortunately load shedding put an end to Room 22’s turn on the slippery slide. They paddled in the tidal pool, climbed the rocks, built sandcastles and looked for sea creatures in the rock pools. The pupils took a break and enjoyed all the extra special treats packed for them. We returned to school, tired and ready for

Grade 7 Leeskompetisie

Eight of our very best Grade 7 pupils tested their reading skills at Herbert Hurd’s annual Grade 7 Afrikaans Leeskompetisie that was held in the Media Centre on Tuesday, 30 April. Afrikaans background music set the tone as the Grade 7 learners were leading in. Competitors and supporters alike enjoyed “Zackie Mostert en die Super Aaklige Soen” by Jaco Jacobs: an entertaining story about a boy who will come up with every excuse not to kiss a girl in the school play in front of ALL the people. We were very honoured to have one of our previous teachers at our school, Mrs Potgieter, as our judge. We would also like to thank Mr Jenneker for keeping the story going throughout the competition. Grade 7's attend Bugsy Malone

The Grade 7's attended the Victoria Park High School's musical comedy production of 'Bugsy Malone' on Tuesday, 7 May 2019. We thoroughly enjoyed being entertained by their high school cast and our teachers were particularly pleased to see that the lead actor, Bugsy, was in fact a past Hurdian - Tuan Thalla. The plot kept the interest of the audience as there was plenty of action, including shooting of splurge guns, and lots of 1920 gangster conflict - with a comedic touch - which was a welcome relief to what we read and experience nowadays. The music, props, outfits and the New York accents all enhanced the production and made it seem believable and far removed from a school hall venue. The

Hudson Park Derby 2019

The Herbert Hurd rugby, mini hockey, netball, senior boys and girls hockey teams travelled to East London on Friday, 03 May, to play in our annual derby against Hudson Park Primary School. Thank you to all the parents who travelled through to support our Hurdians!! It is sincerely appreciated

Sumcay 2019

There was much excitement in the air as the Grade Four pupils arrived at school, all packed and ready for their first EVER overnight excursion. All the Grade Four teachers, Miss Ferraris and Miss Bannister accompanied the pupils. However, having Mr Harris join, helped us to realise just how fortunate we are to have such a devoted and fun headmaster at Herbert Hurd. With the newly formed groups, team mottos and determination, teams took part in various team challenges such as: balancing nails, water-bucket relay, scavenger hunt, building a spaghetti tower and much more! After a delicious supper, Mr Harris took the pupils for a lovely evening walk. There was not a breath of wind and the beauti
