About Herbert Hurd Primary School

History of Herbert Hurd Primary School

Mr Herbert Hurd, after whom the school was named, was born in London in 1869 and came to Port Elizabeth, when he was in his early twenties.

He became a prominent businessman and was for many years a member of the P.E. School Board. He donated the land, on which the school stands to the Education Authorities for the building of an English medium school in this area.

The Herbert Hurd Primary School was offically opened in January 1954 with Mr Martin Emmerick as first Principal.

From a small suburban school, Herbert Hurd has grown, not only in numbers, but in status and prestige.  The fine tradition built up over the years will continue to be safeguarded
